I first heard about YouVeda through The Highest Self Podcast with Sahara Rose.
Sahara Rose has been one of the driving forces in bringing the ancient practice of Ayurveda to the modern world in a way that is easy to understand and apply. I have learned a lot about Ayurveda through her books and absolutely love her podcast. About a year ago she did an interview with Gunny Sodhi – the founder of YouVeda. I loved what I heard in the podcast. I had been struggling with digestion issues for YEARS and I decided to try YouVeda‘s supplements in hopes of finally finding an answer. I had tried SO many things to alleviate my digestive stress, I was ready to give up, but I’m so glad I gave this product a try! I’ve now been taking their vitamins and supplements daily for over a year and have seen amazing results. Even within the first few days, I felt exponentially better!
Recently, I had the pleasure of getting on a phone call with Gunny to talk to him about his company and his journey through healing with Ayurvedic herbs. We also found out that it’s a really small world and that his father’s Ayurvedic health practice is located in the same town where I was born!
When Gunny was in his junior year of college his 16-year-old brother died in a car accident. He fell into a deep depression and his father, the first person to open an Ayurvedic practice in the United States, created a formula of Ayurvedic herbs to help balance his mood. It worked! Since, Gunny has dedicated his life to sharing the incredible healing properties of these supplements with others. Youveda’s goal is to make a difference in people’s lives through balancing mood, strengthening the body and building up one’s digestive fire!
Here is the interview:
I love how open and honest you’ve been about your journey with mental health. It’s obvious that you’ve put a lot of heart into this company. What has it been like to share your personal story so publically?
At the start, it wasn’t comfortable… I was quite embarrassed. My mind went into fight or flight mode. After my brother’s accident, I didn’t even drive for a few months. I hadn’t even told my parents that I was having suicidal thoughts. I was exposing very dark sides of myself. It was a very scary place. But now, I’ve shared my story enough – read about it, talked about it – I can share it with you with confidence. I feel comfortable now because my story can help more people.
I believe it’s my mission to share it. It’s my duty to share that depression is not the end of the road. I was at a stage where there was nothing more that I wanted than to feel better. It’s really up to the individual how much they want to change. You have to focus on diet, mindset and being conscious about what’s going on. At the end of the day, only you can make these changes. Youveda means “knowledge of yourself”.
Can you tell my readers a bit about how you source your herbs and other supplements?
All ayurvedic ingredients are sourced from a good friend in India that I’ve known for a long time. He is very passionate about what he does – so much love & passion. Ashwagandha [for example] can’t be grown anywhere. We grow it as mother nature intends; without herbicides or pesticides. Herbs are all wild-harvested. We work with the department of forestry in India to help local people make a fair wage and educate them on sustainable practices.
We have a facility in India that tests the herbs for the proper spectrum and purity. Everything is tested a second time when it arrives in the United States at a facility here.
Our probiotics, fish oils and multivitamins are sourced in the United States.
Are the supplements safe to take with other medications or while pregnant?
Always ask your doctor to be sure but my wife took the supplements during her pregnancy and didn’t experience any nausea or vomiting during her entire pregnancy. The supplements can help to stabilize hormones, balance digestion and boost your immune system and mood. I would trust to even given the supplements to our child.
What have you learned during your first year of business?
First and foremost, being authentic and transparent. Also, going above and beyond to show our customers respect and concern. We care about our customer’s so much. Lastly, always making sure we have a good grasp on the supply chain. A while ago the mood formula got back ordered so now we really stay on top of supply and demand!
What are your goals for the future?
I’d love to see Youveda become one of the leading ayurvedic brands and a household name. We are getting ourselves out there with people who are aligned in our space.
We want to create pre/post-natal products as well. We also want to use essential oils to further support mood & mental health for our clients. There are also sex drive and metabolism blends that we plan to launch this year. They will likely be in powder form.
